PART Exam Prep Philippines: Complete RTLE Guide

If you're a BS Radiologic Technology graduate in the Philippines, you already know what's coming: the Radiologic Technologist Licensure Examination (RTLE), administered by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). With recent pass rates hovering between 55% and 60%, the exam is challenging but very passable — with the right preparation.

This guide covers everything you need to know: the exam structure, subject breakdown, a study plan, historical pass rates, registration requirements, and links to PART and PRC resources. Whether you're a first-taker or a retaker, this is your one-stop prep resource.

Exam Overview

The RTLE is a paper-based, multiple-choice exam taken over two consecutive days. It's held annually in December at testing centers across the Philippines, with a Special Professional Licensure Exam (SPLE) usually offered in June for qualified applicants.

The 5 Subject Clusters (20% Each)

Under the Enhanced Table of Specifications (TOS) adopted in 2023, all five clusters are weighted equally at 20%. This is a significant change from older syllabi where percentages varied by subject.

Cluster 1: Radiologic Physics, Equipment, Biology & Protection (20%)

This cluster covers the foundational science of radiography:

• Radiologic Physics — nature of radiation, X-ray production, beam characteristics (quality, intensity, filtration), photon interactions with matter (photoelectric, Compton, coherent scatter)
• Imaging Equipment — X-ray machine components, fluoroscopy, mobile units, CT and MRI equipment operation and troubleshooting
• Radiobiology — biological effects of ionizing radiation, radiosensitivity of tissues, cellular response, dose-response curves
• Radiation Protection — ALARA principle, time-distance-shielding, patient protection, personnel dosimetry (TLD, OSL, film badge), regulatory dose limits
• Quality Assurance — QC testing protocols, image quality standards, preventive maintenance
• Imaging Informatics — digital imaging fundamentals, PACS, DICOM, EHR integration

Cluster 2: Image Production and Evaluation (20%)

Focuses on how images are created and assessed:

• Film-Screen Imaging — screen phosphors, film processing chemistry, characteristic curve (H&D), exposure factors (kVp, mAs, SID, OID), image artifacts
• Image Quality — spatial resolution, contrast resolution, density, distortion, noise, quantum mottle
• Computed & Digital Radiography — CR plates, DR detectors, exposure index (EI), image processing algorithms, windowing/leveling, digital QA

Cluster 3: Radiographic Positioning and Procedures (20%)

The most clinically practical cluster:

• Radiographic Positioning — all anatomical regions (chest, abdomen, upper extremity, lower extremity, skull, facial bones, spine, pelvis), positioning landmarks, immobilization, pediatric/geriatric/trauma adaptations
• Contrast Examinations — contrast media types (barium, iodine), administration routes, patient preparation, contraindications, adverse reactions and management
• Special Procedures — decubitus views, stress views, weight-bearing studies, mobile radiography, OR radiography

Cluster 4: Patient Care and Management (20%)

Tests both clinical and professional competencies:

• Anatomy & Physiology — all body systems with emphasis on radiographic anatomy
• Medical Terminology — prefixes, suffixes, root words, abbreviations commonly used in radiology
• Patient Care — communication, infection control, aseptic technique, vital signs, patient transfer, emergency response (contrast reaction, anaphylaxis)
• Professional Ethics — RA 7431 (Radiologic Technology Act of 1992), Code of Ethics, patient confidentiality, informed consent, legal liability
• Administration — healthcare organization, quality improvement, documentation, resource management
• Radiologic Pathology — recognizing pathologies on imaging, common diseases, anatomical variations

Cluster 5: Radiological Sciences (20%)

Covers all advanced imaging modalities outside general radiography:

• Ultrasonography — ultrasound physics, transducer types, scanning techniques, Doppler principles
• Computed Tomography — CT physics, image reconstruction (filtered back-projection, iterative), dose modulation, CTDI/DLP, contrast protocols
• Magnetic Resonance Imaging — MRI physics (T1, T2, proton density), pulse sequences, safety (projectile, RF heating, acoustic noise), contraindications
• Nuclear Medicine — radiopharmaceuticals, gamma camera, SPECT, PET, radiation safety in NM
• Interventional Radiology — angiography, catheter placements, biopsies, sterile technique, radiation dose management in fluoroscopy
• Radiation Therapy — principles of radiation oncology, treatment planning, dose fractionation, teletherapy vs brachytherapy
• Pharmacology & Venipuncture — contrast agents, sedatives, IV line insertion, adverse reaction management

Historical Pass Rates (2015–2025)

The trend is encouraging — the December 2025 cycle saw the highest pass rate in a decade at 59.49%. This suggests exam preparation resources and teaching quality are improving across the country.

Note: The exam schedule shifted over the years. Pre-pandemic, RTLE was held every July. Changes during and after the pandemic moved it to the current December schedule with an SPLE option in June.

12-Week Study Plan for the RTLE

Weeks 1-3: Physics & Image Production

Start with the science. If you understand why X-rays are produced and how they interact with matter, everything else in radiography becomes clearer. Focus on:

• X-ray tube components and the production of Bremsstrahlung and characteristic radiation
• The electromagnetic spectrum, photon energy, wavelength, and frequency
• Photoelectric vs Compton scatter — and how each affects image quality and patient dose
• kVp, mAs, SID, OID — and the formulas that connect them (use our calculators to drill these)
• Digital imaging concepts: CR vs DR, pixel, matrix, bit depth, exposure index

Weeks 4-6: Positioning & Procedures

Go region by region. For each projection, memorize:

• Part position — patient orientation, anatomical landmarks
• Central ray — entrance point, angle, and exit point
• Structures demonstrated — what the image should clearly show
• Evaluation criteria — how to tell if the image is acceptable

Pay special attention to contrast studies (barium swallow, IVU, HSG) — these are high-yield topics in the Philippine exam.

Weeks 7-9: Patient Care & Ethics

This is often underestimated. The Philippine exam puts significant weight on RA 7431 and the Code of Ethics for Radiologic Technologists. Know:

• The key provisions of RA 7431 (Radiologic Technology Act of 1992)
• Patient rights, confidentiality, and informed consent
• Contrast media reactions — types, signs, and management protocols
• Infection control: standard precautions, sterilization levels, and aseptic technique
• Vital signs, CPR, and emergency response in the radiology department

Weeks 10-11: Advanced Modalities

Cluster 5 covers a lot of ground. Prioritize:

• CT: Hounsfield units, window width/level, image reconstruction, dose descriptors (CTDI, DLP, SSDE)
• MRI: T1 vs T2 weighting, basic pulse sequences (SE, GRE, IR), MRI safety zones
• Ultrasound: Transducer frequencies, Doppler modes, acoustic impedance
• Nuclear Medicine: Common radiopharmaceuticals by organ system, gamma camera principles
• Radiation Therapy: Teletherapy vs brachytherapy, treatment planning basics, dose fractionation

Week 12: Simulated Exams & Final Review

Take at least two full-length practice exams under timed conditions. Review every wrong answer and categorize your weak areas. Focus your final days on your lowest-performing clusters.

Registration Requirements

Applications are filed through the PRC LERIS online portal at online.prc.gov.ph. Prepare these documents:

1. PSA-issued Birth Certificate
2. PSA-issued Marriage Certificate (for married female applicants)
3. Transcript of Records (TOR) — with "For Board Examination Purposes" remark
4. Valid NBI Clearance
5. Two (2) passport-size photos (white background, name tag visible)
6. Exam fee payment (via PRC LERIS)

Eligibility: Filipino citizen, graduate of a CHED-recognized BS Radiologic Technology program, completed clinical internship, and of good moral character.

After the Exam

Results are typically released within 3 working days. Successful examinees proceed to:

1. Oath-taking — in-person or online ceremony via LERIS
2. Initial Registration — get your PRC ID (Professional Identification Card) and Certificate of Registration
3. You are now officially an RRT (Registered Radiologic Technologist)

Required documents for registration include your Notice of Admission, Oath Form, two passport-size photos, documentary stamps, and a brown envelope.

Final Advice

The RTLE is challenging but the trend is in your favor — passing rates have been rising steadily since 2021. The content is finite. There are only so many ways the Board can ask about positioning landmarks, the inverse square law, and RA 7431. Cover every cluster, drill practice questions daily, and walk into the exam room with confidence.
