The good news? It's a well-trodden road, and thousands of successful rad techs have walked it before you.
This guide explains a common U.S. route built around ARRT certification and registration. It is not the only route authorized in every jurisdiction: education, state licensure or permits, and employer requirements can differ. The six steps below show what to verify from program selection through employment.
A radiologic technologist working in radiography (also called a radiographer or rad tech) is a healthcare professional who performs diagnostic radiographic examinations under an authorized practitioner's order and within applicable law, facility policy, and personal competence. Radiographers position patients, operate X-ray equipment, optimize technical factors, and evaluate images for technical quality; physicians and other authorized practitioners make the diagnostic interpretation. An associate degree is the typical entry-level education reported by BLS, but an advertised program length may exclude prerequisites or admission waits. ARRT allows the required associate degree or higher to be in any subject, provided it comes from an institution accredited by an ARRT-recognized agency; the candidate must also complete an ARRT-approved radiography program. The degree may be earned before or after the radiography program, but ARRT requires it before the examination. A bachelor's degree is not required for ARRT radiography certification, though individual employers may prefer one for some later roles.

During clinical education, you'll apply positioning, patient assessment, exposure optimization, infection-control, and radiation-protection principles under supervision. Follow the current ARRT competency requirements, your program's validated protocol, equipment guidance, and the clinical instructor's directions rather than treating one textbook measurement as universal.

Under ARRT's requirements in effect through February 28, 2027, candidates must demonstrate competence in 10 mandatory general patient-care activities, 36 mandatory imaging procedures, and 15 elective imaging procedures selected under ARRT's category rules. After your program verifies completion and you satisfy ARRT's degree, education, and ethics requirements, you may apply for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) radiography examination. ARRT's three-year education rule requires primary-pathway candidates to establish eligibility and apply within three years after completing the program; the degree must be earned before the examination. ARRT certification and registration is a private professional credential—not a state license. BLS says employers typically require or prefer certification, and many states use ARRT examinations or credentials, but legal authority to work depends on the law where you practice.
ARRT's ethics requirement applies to candidates as well as registrants. For the specifications in effect through February 28, 2027, the radiography exam has 200 scored items plus 30 unidentified pilot items (230 total). ARRT's 2026 primary-pathway handbook lists 230 minutes of test time and a 250-minute appointment that also includes tutorial, nondisclosure-agreement, and survey time. Pearson administers the computer-based examination at available test centers during the candidate's assigned window. ARRT uses a scaled passing score of 75; that is not necessarily 75% correct. ARRT certification and registration is not the same as state licensure. ARRT reports that more than 75% of states have licensing laws covering at least some radiologic-technology practice—not that every state licenses every radiographer or uses the same scope. Some states use an ARRT examination or credential in their process; others have different categories, exemptions, education, examination, or continuing-education rules. Passing an ARRT-administered state exam does not itself confer ARRT certification, and earning ARRT credentials does not itself confer a state license.

ARRT registrants renew annually. Most R.T.s must also complete and report 24 approved continuing-education credits every two-year biennium. Continuing Qualifications Requirements (CQR) apply every 10 years to R.T.s who earned a credential on or after January 1, 2011; the three-year CQR window includes a professional profile, structured self-assessment, and any prescribed CE. State-license renewal and employer competency requirements are separate and may not match ARRT's cycle.

An associate-degree program at a public college may be an efficient route, but it is not universally the fastest or least expensive. Compare the full calendar and net cost—not just advertised program months or tuition per credit.
There is no reliable national flat price for becoming a radiographer. Public, private nonprofit, proprietary, hospital-based, resident, and nonresident prices differ substantially, and the school's advertised tuition may omit major expenses.
