ARRT uses the phrase certification and registration. Passing the examination is one requirement; use R.T.(R)(ARRT) only after ARRT awards the credential, and maintain it to keep using it. If you have not been awarded it, list your accurate application or scheduled-exam status without placing the credential after your name. ARRT's primary pathway requires an associate degree or higher and completion of an ARRT-approved educational program; JRCERT accreditation is valuable but is not itself a universal ARRT eligibility rule. The safest interview examples are generalized, hypothetical, or genuinely de-identified under your organization's privacy rulesβnot merely stripped of a name. Do not reveal protected health information, distinctive circumstances that could identify someone, or confidential facility information. Describe how you explained the procedure, respected refusal, and escalated questions about consent or decision-making capacity rather than implying that force replaced consent and safe practice. Involve a support person only when consistent with the patient's wishes, an authorized representative's role, and facility policy. Radiologic technologist interviews may combine behavioral questions ("Tell me about a time whenβ¦") with technical questions ("How would you select technical factors for a portable chest?"). The format and emphasis vary by employer.
One common interview question is: "How do you ensure proper positioning on a trauma patient who can't cooperate?" Start with the order, patient identity, immediate hazards, spinal or movement precautions, and the patient's condition. Coordinate with the trauma team; do not remove immobilization or move the head, neck, lines, or unstable anatomy without authorization. Adapt the projection and use approved immobilization or assistance, tight collimation, the facility technique chart, and clear explanation when possible. "Tell me about a difficult patient interaction and how you handled it."
Strategy: Use STAR with a generalized or properly de-identified real example. If privacy rules prevent a safe real example, ask whether you may answer with a clearly labeled hypotheticalβnever present an invented event as something that occurred. Describe communication, recognition and escalation of consent or capacity concerns, authorized assistance, and safe adaptation. Do not disclose patient or confidential facility information, invent an outcome, or attribute a department-wide metric to one encounter without valid data.
"Describe a time you made a positioning error and how you corrected it."
Strategy: Be honest and do not normalize unnecessary repeat exposures. Explain how you recognized the issue, paused, consulted a supervisor or radiologist when appropriate, determined whether a repeat was clinically necessary under policy, corrected the cause, documented or reported it as required, and changed your pre-exposure checks. Never imply that an image was repeated automatically or concealed.
"How do you prioritize exams in a busy ER situation?"
Strategy: Follow the department's triage and escalation process, clarify priorities with the responsible clinical team, communicate delays or changes in condition, and avoid independently diagnosing or reprioritizing solely from an exam label. Time-critical stroke and trauma pathways are institution-specific.
"Walk me through positioning for a lateral cervical spine on a trauma patient."
Strategy: Start with the trauma protocol and spinal precautions: do not move the patient's head or neck or remove immobilization without authorization. For an initial horizontal-beam lateral, adapt receptor placement and centering to the patient and equipment while minimizing motion. Do not ask an injured patient to pull the shoulders down or apply weights routinely; if C7-T1 is not demonstrated, notify the team and obtain only the additional projection or cross-sectional imaging ordered under the local protocol. "What technical factors would you use for a portable AP chest on a 200 lb patient?"
Strategy: Do not promise a universal kVp/mAs from body weight alone. State that you would verify the order and patient, assess chest thickness, pathology, position, grid need, detector, generator, and source-to-image distance, then select the validated facility/equipment technique-chart factors and adjust within policy. Use the longest practical SID, collimate, minimize rotation, give an inspiration instruction when the patient can follow it, and review exposure indicators and image quality. Portable systems vary, and AEC is not universally available or appropriate.
"What's the difference between DR and CR, and which do you prefer?"
Strategy: DR commonly uses an integrated or wireless digital detector with rapid image availability; CR uses a reusable photostimulable phosphor plate that is read in a separate processor. Both have wide dynamic range and both require correct technique, collimation, exposure-indicator review, and quality control; neither prevents dose creep. Avoid claiming that one is always more consistent or that every department uses the same backup workflow.

Apply when the posting permits students or exam candidates; some employers recruit before graduation and make offers contingent on education, ARRT certification and registration, state licensure, background checks, or other stated requirements. Others require all credentials at application. Hiring and onboarding time varies, so do not rely on a universal 8-12-week application window or 2-4-week start date.
Follow the posting's communication instructions. If no timeline is given, one brief, professional follow-up after a reasonable interval can confirm continued interest; repeated calls can be counterproductive. Include your name and requisition number, but do not send sensitive credential or medical information by unsecured email.
No authoritative source establishes a nationwide median time-to-hire for an individual new graduate.
